If you haven’t been to Harbor Freight, you’re missing out.
Harbor Freight Tools is more than just another hardware store that sells nails and PVC pipe–it’s a man mall. Inside you can find solar panel kits, wood stoves, welders, and tons of stuff in between.
Even though I wasn’t looking to buy anything in particular, today I thought I’d take you guys with me just to give you a look at a handful of items sold there.
City Cottage is a downloadable ezine based out of the UK. And it’s free!
In addition to their info-packed publications on fruit trees, gardening, bee-keeping, and raising livestock, they also have a pretty good website.
Their site has a bunch of really cool photos and videos showing homesteading how-to’s from “the island across the pond.”
They are also preparing to launch a series of online courses, which I am very much looking forward to. In these courses, they use a series of web cams around their cottage to show you in detail all the rudiments of homestead particulars, including:
Baking
Bread making
Brewing beer and wine
Cheese Making
Sausages
Bacon and curing
Smoking
Keeping poultry
Beekeeping
These classes will be offered for less than $10 each (I’m to lazy to convert from GBP), and should be available soon. In the day and age of free information, it’s sometimes hard to justify spending money to learn something, but after spending enough time on their site, I can tell it will be worth it to me.
I recently got some fatwood from Jeepinator, our good friend and fellow prepper.
He found a ton of it on his property in North Carolina, and was kind enough to send some my way.
So what is fatwood?
Quite simply, fatwood (or “heartwood”) is wood from the core of a pine tree. It’s saturated with pitch, so it’s EXTREMELY flammable, and burns for a long time. It’s like the candle version of wood.
Some people even claim they can light their fatwood tinder when it’s soaked.
All this amounts to one thing–fatwood makes awesome tinder.
